PostgreSQL update releases now available

The PostgreSQL Project today released minor versions updating all active branches of the PostgreSQL object-relational database system, including versions 8.4.1, 8.3.8, 8.2.14, 8.1.18, 8.0.22, and 7.4.26. This release fixes one moderate-risk and two low-risk security issues: an authentication issue, a denial of service issue, and a privilege-escalation exploit. All users should upgrade their database installations as soon as reasonably possible.

This update release also fixes the "could not reattach shared memory" issue which has plagued many Windows PostgreSQL users, and updates time zone files for several countries. There are 23 other minor fixes, many of them affecting only version 8.4. See the release notes for full details.

As with other minor releases, users are not required to dump and reload their database in order to apply this update release; you may simply shut down PostgreSQL and update its binaries. Users skipping more than one update may need to check the release notes for extra, post-update steps.

Steve Langasek has announced the availability of the first alpha release of Ubuntu 10.04, code name "Lucid Lynx": "Welcome to Lucid Lynx Alpha 1, which will in time become Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. New features: updated packages, Linux kernel 2.6.32, KDE 4.4 beta 1, HAL removal. Known issues: the nv driver used by default for NVIDIA video chipsets on the live CD is reported to lead to X server crashes; the firmware for the bnx2 driver is not available on the alternate and server installer images at install time; manual partitioning in the graphical installer is reported to cause the installer to crash; clicking on the installer icon on the Kubuntu desktop CD fails to launch Ubiquity; the Kubuntu alpha 1 desktop ISOs are too large to fit on a CD." Joe Brockmeier has announced the availability of the second and final release candidate for openSUSE 11.2: "This is it folks! We're almost there for openSUSE 11.2. Time to grab the final 11.2 release candidate and shake out any remaining bugs to get the lizard ready for release. This release includes an updated kernel, Samba, Firefox, and more. Distribution Release: Edubuntu 9.10

Edubuntu has been labelled as "discontinued" ever since it became just an add-on to Ubuntu rather than a complete, installable operating system. As of yesterday, its status is once again "active": "For the past few releases, it has been an add-on CD to Ubuntu. Our users have made overwhelming requests for a full-blown installation CD again and we have listened. Edubuntu 9.10 is now a DVD that contains a full Ubuntu installation plus the Edubuntu packages and the LTSP server packages." Theo de Raadt has announced the release of OpenBSD 4.6. The release arrives earlier than expected; as many of the project's paying customers have already received their CDs, the 4.6 tree of the OpenBSD FTP server has been opened to allow full access to any extra packages. Development Release: Nexenta Core Platform 3.0 Alpha 1

Anil Gulecha has announced the availability of the first alpha release of Nexenta Core Platform 3.0, a free and open-source operating system combining the OpenSolaris kernel with GNU application userland: "On behalf of the Nexenta project, I'd like to announce the availability of the Nexenta Core Platform (NCP) 3.0 alpha 1. This is the first release towards NCP 3.0. The main changes over NCP2 include: move from OpenSolaris build 104 to 124. From this release of NCP, all sunw* packages are natively built on Nexenta. The complete sources are available in the repository, along with Sun Studio 12 and other tools to roll your own kernel. Matias Fonzo has announced the release of Dragora GNU/Linux 1.1, a 100% "libre" distribution based on the concept of simplicity and inspired by Slackware Linux: "Dragora GNU/Linux 1.1 is the evolution of its previous version 1.0. NEW • Development Release: Mandriva Linux 2010 RC2

The second and also the last release candidate for Mandriva Linux 2010 is now available on public mirrors: "This RC2 version is available through following images: Free version, 32 and 64 bit DVDs; One version, KDE or GNOME (available on Monday); and Virtual images based on One images (available on Monday). These ISOs are hybrid ISOs which means you can dump it on an USB key to install it. Use Mandriva-seed available in ISOs repository, it's as easy as a click! Distribution Release: Plamo Linux 4.7

Mitsuhoro Kojima has announced the release of Plamo Linux 4.7, a Slackware-inspired Japanese Linux distribution designed for intermediate and advanced users. This release comes with some major software updates, including Linux kernel 2.6.30.7, GCC 4.3.4, glibc 2.10.1, KDE 4.3.1, GNOME 2.26, Xfce 4.6.1, ptetex3 20090610 and OpenOffice.org 3.1.1. KDE especially has been through some substantial tweaking which should make it a much improved implementation of the popular desktop. The distribution comes on a full 3GB DVD image, but for those who prefer to download just what they need, there are also five CD images, with CD1 containing the based system and X.Org, CD2 includes Xfce, CD3 has KDE, TeTeX and kernel sources, CD4 includes GNOME and OpenOffice.org, while CD5 has all the contributed packages. Flavio Pereira de Oliveira has announced the release of GoblinX 3.0 "G:Standard", a Slackware-based live CD featuring the KDE 4 desktop: "The GoblinX Project is proud to announce the released of the new stable G:Standard. Andreas Jaeger has announced the availability of the 8th milestone release of openSUSE 11.2: "The openSUSE project is happy to announce that the last openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 8 (M8) is available for download. Paul Sherman has announced the release of Absolute Linux 13.0.2, a new update of the lightweight distribution based on Slackware Linux: "Absolute Linux 13.0.2 released. PostgreSQL 2009-09-09 Security Update

The PostgreSQL Project today released minor versions updating all active branches of the PostgreSQL object-relational database system, including versions 8.4.1, 8.3.8, 8.2.14, 8.1.18, 8.0.22, and 7.4.26. This release fixes one moderate-risk and two low-risk security issues: an authentication issue, a denial of service issue, and a privilege-escalation exploit. All users should upgrade their database installations as soon as reasonably possible.

This update release also fixes the "could not reattach shared memory" issue which has plagued many Windows PostgreSQL users, and updates time zone files for several countries. There are 23 other minor fixes, many of them affecting only version 8.4. See the release notes for full details.

As with other minor releases, users are not required to dump and reload their database in order to apply this update release; you may simply shut down PostgreSQL and update its binaries. Users skipping more than one update may need to check the release notes for extra, post-update steps.

Final release of PostgreSQL 8.4 comes much closer today with our first Release Candidate. Now, we count on all of the PostgreSQL users and developers worldwide to test this Release Candidate to make sure that it is stable, reliable, secure and high-performance enough to be called an official PostgreSQL release. Please download 8.4 RC1 today and test it with your applications.

Note that no Windows MSI installer will be released for this Release Candidate. Windows users are advised to use the One-Click Installer instead.

Several of the issues patched in this release relate to pg_migrator, the new beta in-place upgrade tool for upgrading PostgreSQL databases. Please test migrating a copy of your 8.3 databases to 8.4 and report further issues with pg_migrator, especially issues related to Additional Modules (contrib). pg_migrator will release version RC1 soon which will be compatible with 8.4 RC1, and you can get it on pgFoundry.

This Release Candidate also includes a number of changes to handling of NULL inputs to internal functions in order to prevent denial-of-service exploits. First, the general internal_in() function is now NONSTRICT in order to trap NULL errors for debugging. Second, several internal functions in our Additional Modules have been marked STRICT to lock them down, especially several GiST index functions and pg_freespacemap. Please check for unanticipated side-effects of this more secure policy for internal functions against your application, especially if you use PostgreSQL plug-ins like GIS and BLAST.

MySQL 5.4 Released ( April 22, 2009 )

Sun Microsystems has released MySQL 5.4, a new version of the popular open source database. MySQL 5.4 includes performance and scalability improvements enabling the InnoDB storage engine to scale up to 16-way x86 servers and 64-way CMT servers. MySQL 5.4 also includes new subquery optimizations and JOIN improvements, resulting in 90% better response times for certain queries (see www.mysql.com/benchmarks). These performance and scalability gains are transparent and don't require any additional application or SQL coding to take advantage of them.

According to Sun's Karen Tegan Padir, "Without any modifications to your applications, MySQL 5.4 will transparently increase the performance and scalability of your applications, to enable them to scale under more demanding user and data processing loads. MySQL 5.4 is also better suited for scale-up deployments on SMP systems."

MySQL 5.4 features include:

• Scalability improvements -- these fixes allow the InnoDB storage engine to scale up to 16-way x86 servers and 64-way CMT servers, more than doubling its previous capability;
• Subquery optimizations -- improves the performance of analytic query operations, with some subqueries now executing in a fraction of the time compared to previous MySQL versions;
• New query algorithms -- utilizes main memory to speed up the execution time of multi-way joins, especially for MySQL Cluster because the number of round-trips between the server and cluster nodes is minimized;
• Improved stored procedures -- enables more robust error management through the implementation of the SIGNAL/RESIGNAL functions, so applications can more easily rely on stored procedures for business logic;
• Improved prepared statements -- Output parameters will now be supported in prepared statements, which increases their functionality;
• Improved Information Schema -- provides more metadata access to parameters and data return types that stored procedures use, which allows much more information to be made available for developers using connectors such as ODBC and JDBC;
• Improved DTrace support -- improves diagnostics and troubleshooting capabilities for MySQL on the Solaris Operating System.

MySQL 5.4 will be generally available for a wide variety of hardware and software platforms, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SuSE Enterprise Linux, Microsoft Windows, Sun Solaris 10 Operating System, Mac OS X, Free BSD, HP-UX, IBM AIX, IBM i5/OS and other Linux distributions.

if you use md5 encryption, you must create a database user with option encryption
ex. createuser new_user -s -E
the default createuser is not encrypted.

in this case i want "Install Tomcat 6 on Debian 5.0 (Lenny) with virtual hosts and Apache2 integration" . i'll write step by step :

1. you should have installed DEBIAN Linux 5.0 (codename LENNY) already.
2. install jdk6 (java sdk version 1.6) on your system.
3. install Apache2
in debian you must be root then type apt-get install apache2
4. download tomcat6, then install it
4a. extract tomcat6 tar bal
tar -zxvf apache-tomcat-6.0.18.tar.gz
mkdir /usr/local/tomcat6
mv apache-tomcat-6.0.18 /usr/local/tomcat6

i have installed tomcat6 on /usr/local/tomcat6 directory

4b. create tomcat6 init-script (in my indonesian blog)

4c. Activate tomcat-manager (see my indonesian blog)
vim /usr/local/tomcat6/conf/tomcat-users.xml

then restart your tomcat6, it will make a change

5. install mod_jk connector (mod_jk.so)
apt-get install libapache2-mod-jk

6. edit file workers.properties

DEBIAN 5.0 released (codename Lenny)

The Debian Project is pleased to announce the official release of Debian GNU/Linux version 5.0 (codenamed "Lenny") after 22 months of constant development. Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system which supports a total of twelve processor architectures and includes the KDE, GNOME, Xfce, and LXDE desktop environments. It also features compatibility with the FHS v2.3 and software developed for version 3.2 of the LSB.

Debian GNU/Linux runs on computers ranging from palmtops and handheld systems to supercomputers, and on nearly everything in between. A total of twelve architectures are supported: Sun SPARC (sparc), HP Alpha (alpha), Motorola/IBM PowerPC (powerpc), Intel IA-32 (i386), IA-64 (ia64), HP PA-RISC (hppa), MIPS (mips, mipsel), ARM (arm, armel), IBM S/390 (s390), and AMD64 and Intel EM64T (amd64).

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" adds support for Marvell's Orion platform which is used in many storage devices. Supported storage devices include the QNAP Turbo Station series, HP Media Vault mv2120, and Buffalo Kurobox Pro. Additionally, "Lenny" now supports several Netbooks, in particular the Eee PC by Asus. "Lenny" also contains the build tools for Emdebian which allow Debian source packages to be cross-built and shrunk to suit embedded ARM systems.

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" includes the new ARM EABI port, "armel". This new port provides a more efficient use of both modern and future ARM processors. As a result, the old ARM port (arm) has now been deprecated.

This release includes numerous updated software packages, such as the K Desktop Environment 3.5.10 (KDE), an updated version of the GNOME desktop environment 2.22.2, the Xfce 4.4.2 desktop environment, LXDE 0.3.2.1, the GNUstep desktop 7.3, X.Org 7.3, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1, GIMP 2.4.7, Iceweasel 3.0.6 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Firefox), Icedove 2.0.0.19 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Thunderbird), PostgreSQL 8.3.6, MySQL 5.0.51a, GNU Compiler Collection 4.3.2, Linux kernel version 2.6.26, Apache 2.2.9, Samba 3.2.5, Python 2.5.2 and 2.4.6, Perl 5.10.0, PHP 5.2.6, Asterisk 1.4.21.2, Emacs 22, Inkscape 0.46, Nagios 3.06, Xen Hypervisor 3.2.1 (dom0 as well as domU support), OpenJDK 6b11, and more than 23,000 other ready-to-use software packages (built from over 12,000 source packages).

With the integration of X.Org 7.3 the X server autoconfigures itself with most hardware. Newly introduced packages allow the full support of NTFS filesystems and the use of most multimedia keys out of the box. Support for Adobe® Flash® format files is available via the swfdec or Gnash plugins. Overall improvements for notebooks have been introduced, such as out of the box support of CPU frequency scaling. For leisure time several new games have been added, including puzzle games as well as first-person shooters. Also notable is the introduction of "goplay", a graphical games browser offering filters, search, screenshots and descriptions for games in Debian.

The availability and updates of OpenJDK, GNU Java compiler, GNU Java bytecode interpreter, Classpath and other free versions of Sun's Java technology, into Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 allow us to ship Java-based applications in Debian's "main" repository.

Further improvements in system security include the installation of available security updates before the first reboot by the Debian Installer, the reduction of setuid root binaries and open ports in the standard installation, and the use of GCC hardening features in the builds of several security-critical packages. Various applications have specific improvements, too. PHP for example is now built with the Suhosin hardening patch.

For non-native English speaking users the package management systems now support translated package descriptions and will automatically show the description of a package in the native language of the user, if available.

Debian GNU/Linux can be installed from various installation media such as DVDs, CDs, USB sticks and floppies, or from the network. GNOME is the default desktop environment and is contained on the first CD. Other desktop environments — KDE, Xfce, or LXDE — can be installed through two new alternative CD images. Again available with Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 are multi-arch CDs and DVDs supporting installation of multiple architectures from a single disc; and this release adds Blu-ray Discs, allowing the archive for an entire architecture to be shipped on a single BD.

In addition to the regular installation media, Debian GNU/Linux can now also be directly used without prior installation. The special images used, known as live images, are available for CDs, USB sticks, and netboot setups. Initially, these are provided for the amd64 and i386 architectures only.

The installation process for Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 has been improved in many ways: among many other improvements, support for installation from more than one CD or DVD has been restored, firmware required by some devices can be loaded by using removable media, and installations via Braille display are supported. The installer boot process has also received much attention: a graphical menu can be used to choose front-ends and desktop environments, and to select expert or rescue mode. The installation system for Debian GNU/Linux has now been translated to 63 languages.

Debian GNU/Linux can be downloaded right now via bittorrent (the recommended way), jigdo or HTTP; see Debian GNU/Linux on CDs for further information. It will soon be available on DVD, CD-ROM and Blu-ray Disc from numerous vendors, too.

Upgrades to Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 from the previous release, Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codenamed "Etch") are automatically handled by the aptitude package management tool for most configurations, and to a certain degree also by the apt-get package management tool. As always, Debian GNU/Linux systems can be upgraded painlessly, in place, without any forced downtime, but it is strongly recommended to read the release notes for possible issues, and for detailed instructions on installing and upgrading. The release notes will be further improved and translated to additional languages in the weeks after the release.

Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" is dedicated to Thiemo Seufer, a Debian Developer who died on December 26th, 2008 in a tragic car accident. Thiemo was involved in Debian in many ways. He has maintained several packages and was the main supporter of the Debian port to the MIPS architectures. He was also a member of our kernel team, as well as a member of the Debian Installer team. His contributions reached far beyond the Debian project. He also worked on the MIPS port of the Linux kernel, the MIPS emulation of qemu, and far too many smaller projects to be named here.

Thiemo's work, commitment, broad technical knowledge and ability to share this with others will be missed. Thiemo's contributions will not be forgotten. The high standards of his work make it hard to pick up.
